What is a sprite?
The word
sprite comes from English and its translation into Spanish is duende. This
bitmapped graphic resource was popularized in the late 1970s and early 1980s by
Jay Miner, a chip designer.
Sprites
represent a character or object and are used to move regardless of the
background. The sprites have been evolving, at first they were transparent and
small to better adapt to the format of the first computers and entertainment
consoles. Over time they changed in shape and size until the advent of 3D video
games in which they have been almost relegated to the background.

La palabra sprite procede del inglés y su traducción al
español es duende. Este recurso gráfico de mapas de bits fue popularizado a
finales de los 70 y principios de los 80 por Jay Miner, un diseñador de chips.
Los sprites representan un personaje u objeto y se utilizan
para moverse en un fondo estático. Los sprites han ido evolucionando,
al principio eran transparentes y pequeños para adaptarse mejor al formato de
los primeros ordenadores y consolas de entretenimiento. Con el paso del tiempo
fueron cambiando de forma y tamaño hasta la llegada de los videojuegos en 3D en
los que han quedado casi relegados a un segundo plano.
